What would you say if I told you I think this year's Indy Car is faster than this year's Formula 1 car on a road course?

http://www.racer.com/f1-drivers-fin…

The cars were 5 or 6 seconds a lap slower at Jerez. That article references a 20-30% loss of downforce this year. If I had a lot more time on my hands I'd extrapolate some lap times from iRacing to support my argument with some actual data. Compare my lap times to the real life lap times and adjust for the car we have in iRacing versus the current cars etc. While I don't actually think this year's best F1 car will be slower than an Indy Car I do think the slower F1 cars will be slower than an Indy Car around the same track.

What do you think of that?

It wouldn't surprise me one bit.

I like Indy Cars and F1, so...

Indy Cars already have higher top speeds on the big ovals but that might be more because of gearing than power. Not sure.

This year's F1 cars are limited by aero and tire restrictions, plus having to spend a bunch of time developing totally new motors. They can't do anything about the tires but I have a feeling the teams will make a lot of aero progress as the season goes on.

I would say, "Why are you asking me? I love Indycar!"

Both rely on terrible sounding V6 engines, which makes me sad.

The difference being that while Indy sits static, the F1 guys will claw back most of that lost downforce and then some by the end of the season.

I like formula 1, though I think the series is boring, and I hate indycar. You know why? because indycar advertises to people that watch races for wrecks, whereas formula 1 does not. Do I think any less of the drivers or the difficulty of indycar, no, I just despise "racing fans" that only watch races for the wrecks, and I can't stand to be associated with a group of people that, I would argue, is comprised mostly of people wanting to see wrecks.

I have no idea where you get the idea that people watch Indy Car for the wrecks. Indy Car isn't NASCAR.

They won't recover that much by the end of the year. Not even close. They will however recover parts of it for sure. Well at least the 3 or 4 teams with the money available to devote resources to development of their car will...

Even when you try to take downforce off an F1 car they still generate too much to match an Indy Car in oval trim. My comment has nothing to do with Ovals though.

Most of the engineers and drivers seem to expect them to able to recover most of it, if their comments in interviews are to be believed.
